Are you considering getting a base tan right before bathing suit season? That’s the intention of most people when they’re getting ready for the summer. But what if you’re a beginner and not quite sure from where or how to begin.

Even if that’s the case, there’s no need to worry. You can still get the most from the session and even get the shade you’re aiming for. If you’re unsure, feel free to consult with a professional. However, for your ease, we have outlined some tips that’ll help you use a tanning bed:

Exfoliate and Shave

Before you use a tanning bed, it’s important to shave and exfoliate your skin to get the maximum benefit. You can exfoliate a few days before your tanning bed session to ensure that your skin is soft and smooth.

If you’re a first-time tanner, it’s a good idea to shave and wax your body before it tans. Body hair can sometimes block the UV rays from reaching your skin and result in an uneven tan.

Remove all Makeup

Wearing cosmetics and makeup can lead to white spots all over your body. It can also react to the UV rays and trigger your allergies. Before you get into the tanning bed, make sure to use cleaning wipes and get rid of all the makeup.

Wear Protective Eyewear

Overexposure to UV rays can cause your eyes to become damaged. In extreme cases, it can even burn the retina causing blindness. It’s best not to take any risks and wear protective eyewear. Just closing your eyes or putting on a towel won’t help. You have to go the extra mile by wearing protective goggles.

Get Tanning

Once you’ve shaved and exfoliated, it’s time to start the process. You should climb into the tanning bed and lie there. How long you choose to be in it depends on your skin type. If you get burnt easily, you should only stay for five minutes in a level 1 tanning bed. Once you’re comfortable, you can increase the duration to seven minutes and more.

If you find yourself burning, wait a couple of days before you return to the tanning bed. It’s entirely possible to get burnt even when you’re tanned.

Move Around

When you’re tanning, don’t just lie in one position as you won’t get a good tan out of it. You might also get wrinkles that are harder to fix. Remember, if you don’t allow UV rays to reach different parts of your body, you won’t get the tanning effect you want.

So prop your head and lean forward against the pillow. If there is even one wrinkle across your neck, it will turn to a white line that will become more prominent if it’s not exposed properly.
